A free, fair election is attainable thru Ershad’s formula: Chunnu
DOT Desk: Opposition Chief Whip Mujibul Haque Chunnu has said that both Awami League and BNP want to hang on to power permanently by turning the Election Commission into a dysfunctional organ of the state, reports Daily Sun.
The vote can be rigged under the country’s existing electoral system, so both Awami League and BNP resist granting full empowerment to the Election Commission, Chunnu, also secretary general of Jatiya Party (JaPa) said on Tuesday. Referring to the formula proposed by JaPa founder, late President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Chunnu said that a free and fair election could still be conducted in the country if it is held at a proportional rate among the political parties.
The election will be held with party symbols and the party that gets the number of votes will get the lawmakers according to the proportion.
The election will be held using party symbols and the allocation of lawmakers will be based on the proportion of votes each party gets, he said.
Chunnu made the remarks while speaking at an event where a group of professionals, led by Sheikh Runa, joined the JaPa.
The professional expressed their adherence by presenting a bucket of flowers to the party’s secretary-general at its Banani office in Dhaka this afternoon.
Welcoming the newcomers, Chunnu said a total of 12 national elections have been held questionable since the country’s independence and the questions have been raised by the party that suffered a decisive defeat.
In this context, it is not possible to hold a free and fair election in the country under the current electoral system, he said, adding that the incumbent Election Commission is not fully independent and it does not possess the necessary power.
