Sayeed Muhammad: As many as 323 people were killed in different incidents across the country throughout May, says a survey unveiled by Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
BHRC published the report yesterday based on reports gathered from different districts, upazilas, municipalities and national dailies, according to UNB.Of the victims, some 127 were killed in reported gunfights during anti-narcotics drives across the country, meaning that law and order situation collapsed alarmingly.
Expressing grave concern over the killings, the organisation also said the average rate of killing per day is 10.
The rights body asked the law enforcement agencies and the other offices concerned to be more responsible while on duty, saying it is possible to bring down the number of killing to zero through the dynamic activities of the law enforcement agencies.
Only the rule of law, it said, can reduce the growing trend of killing incidents.
The organisation also urged the government and the law enforcement agencies to take effective measures for stopping the torture on and the killings of child.
Among the 323 people, five were killed for dowry, 35 in family feud, 71 in social violence while five in political violence.Besides, five people were killed due to medical negligence, 11 in abduction incidents, seven in disappearing cases, while nine died following sexual harassment, 50 killed mysteriously and 37 were killed after ‘rape’. At least 203 people were killed in road accidents and 25 committed suicides.
