Nazrul Islam Mukul, Kushtia
A 3-day festival to commemorate Lalon Shah and a Lalon fair will begin today at the Lalon Akhra situated at Chheuria, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. The festival has been organized by Lalon Academy Kushtia with the assistance of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
When Fakir Lalon Shah was still alive, he would sit beside the Kaliganga River with his disciples under the full moon of ‘Dol’ and discuss philosophy or sing all night. The river Kaliganga, now deemed ‘dead’ Kaliganga due to the lack of waves, has not been forgotten by Lalon’s followers. Even after his death, every year Lalon fanatics will gather at the Lalon Akhra to meet fellow Lalon followers and celebrate his beliefs and music.
This festival attracts Lalon followers, fans of his music or fans of his lifestyle from all over the country. Although no formal invitation are sent to anyone, people flock to this festival captivated by Lalon’s never fading personality.
General Secretary of Lalon Academy Selim Haque said, “The usual 5-day festivities have been cut short because of the upcoming Independence Day on March 26. Besides the Union Council elections are also ongoing.” Local authorities have taken security measures to ensure everyone’s safety during the festival.
