Hossen Sohel: Two muggers were shot by police while fleeing a mugging, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The incident occurred near the Shishu Park area of Dhaka, around 2am, yesterday.
The injured thieves, Kabir and Salman, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Confirming the matter, Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hossain said a police patrol were on duty in the area when they were informed that two thieves were headed to Shahbagh from the Matsya Bhaban area.
Upon receiving this information, the patrol barricaded the thieves’ motorcycle in front of Shikha Chironton.
The muggers then threatened to attack the policemen with a machete and a pistol, so police fired at them, in self-defence; they shot the suspects’ legs, said Abul Hossain.
However, the thieves’ pistol was found to be a toy. Police recovered the toy, along with a machete, a motorcycle, and a mobile phone from the spot.
The OC also said: “We are investigating the matter and have received some information upon primary interrogation. Hopefully, we will get more.”
Legal action against the two suspects is underway, he added.
