Legal notice has been sent to postpone the by-election of Sylhet-3 constituency. The Election Commission is going to hold the election on July 28 (Wednesday) amid strict restrictions on the prevention of coronavirus infection, reports Daily Nayadiganta.
Yesterday, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir on behalf of the five Supreme Court lawyers sent the notice to the Chief Election Commissioner.
The lawyers sent the notice are Advocate Md Mujahidul Islam, Al-Reza Md Amir, Md Jobaidur Rahman, Md Zahirul Islam and Mustafizur Rahman.
According to the notice, the deadline for holding the Sylhet by-election is September 7, 2021, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution 4 of Bangladesh. Therefore, the by-election to be held on July 26 cannot be postponed – this statement is not the correct interpretation of the law, reports channelionline.com.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said, “There is no chance of postponing the by-election of Sylhet-3 constituency to be held on July 28 due to constitutional obligation.” Calling on voters to come to the polls wearing masks and following social distances, he said, “All activities in this by-election will be out of the lockdown.”
