Tons of unsold imported ginger and garlic are getting rotten in the warehouses of Khatunganj, the largest wholesale commodity hub of Chattogram, report Dhaka Post, Somoy TV.
The wholesalers said that around 1,000 sacks of ginger and garlic got rotten due to the slump in the trading amid the lockdown in the country.
Md Idris, general secretary of Hamidulllah Mia Market Welfare Association of Khatunganj said that the traders imported a huge quantity of commodities targeting Eid-ul-Azha.
“However, the lockdown has been enforced soon after the Eid. The buyers could not come to the market. The traders are incurring losses as perishable items like ginger and garlic got rotten. Many traders are dumping the rotten ginger and garlic,” said he.
During a recent visit to the wholesale hub, it was found that sacks of rotten ginger and garlic were dumped in front of the warehouses.
