30 birds of two species have been imported from South African country Senegal for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur, reports The Daily Star.
The Wildlife and Nature Conservation Wing of the Forest Department handed over the birds to the safari park authorities. The birds now have been kept in quarantine. According to the safari park, a Dhaka-based enterprise imported more than 2,000 birds. The customs authorities at the airport did not release 58 birds as they have no no-objection certificates.
Around half of the birds died under the custody of the customs authorities due to unfavourable weather conditions. Tabibur Rahman, assistant conservator of forest and in-charge of Safari Park said that a total 35 birds were brought but 5 of them died.
The remaining birds are now in good condition.
