Rayer Bazar Koborstan is the largest Muslim graveyard in Bangladesh and according to the authorities here, the third largest in Asia. The graveyard sits on 96 acres of reclaimed land from the shore of the river Buriganga after its course dried up near Mohammadpur. Army engineers prepared the cenetary and the burials started in 2016.
It is the greenest graveyard in Bangladesh, with hundreds of Krishnachura trees dotting the skylines. When the Krishnachura blooms during late spring and early summer, the graveyard wears a beautiful look. There are also other local and exotic tees with their shades keeping the graves cool throughout the year.
The authorities have initially allowed 11-year and 25-year lease of the graves at a hefty fees. It has allowed several families to build concrete-brick-tiles graves for their deceased family members. But the leasing system has been halted recently after the number of burials in the the cenetary rocketed due to Coronavirus.
