[2] High Court remarked that actress Shamsunnahar Smrity, popularly known by her screen name Pori Moni, became a victim of media trial after arresting her with liquor, report Bangla Tribune, ETV.
The HC also said that the law enforcing agencies victimized a woman.
[3] The HC bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Selim made the remarks while hearing on Pori Moni’s appeal to quash charges under narcotic case.
[4] Earlier Pori Moni appealed to the High Court (HC) for quashing the case filed against her under the Narcotics Control Act and subsequent indictment by the trial court, reports UNB.
[5] The appeal was submitted according to section 561, A of Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 on saving the inherent power of HC Division, said Pori Moni’s lawyer ZI Khan Panna.
On 5 January, Dhaka special judge of court-10, Md Nazrul Islam indicted Pori Moni and two others in the case filed under the Narcotics Control Act. The court fixed 1 February as the next date for hearing the testimonies of witnesses.
Pori Moni and two others are currently out on bail in the case. On 15 November last year, Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge KM Emrul Kayesh took into cognizance the charges framed by police against the accused.
