[4] Twenty-two people were arrested till this afternoon in two cases filed in connection with the clashes between leaders, activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League, Awami League and police, Ansar in Barishal, report The Daily Star, Prothom Alo.
“Drives are underway to arrest the rest of the accused,” said Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Islam.
[5] Police and upazila administration filed the cases naming 122 BCL, Jubo League activists and Barishal City Corporation workers. In addition, about 500 unnamed people were also accused in the cases.
[6] Sheikh Syed Ahmed Manna, a BCC ward councilor accused in both the cases, was arrested from his sister’s house in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area, according to a message from Rapid Action Battalion’s media wing.
[7] Manna’s sister Asma Begum said, “Manna was taken out of the house by plainclothes Detective Branch (DB) men at 10pm yesterday.”
[8] On the other hand, the family of Saddam Hussein, who was a BCL activist and died seven months ago, claimed police raided their home to arrest him.
[9] Barishal District BCL General Secretary Abdur Razzak claimed that he had come to Barishal from Dhaka on a flight on the following day of the incident. He has also been made an accused in the cases.
Barishal City Corporation (BCC) Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah is the main accused in the two cases.
[10] Meanwhile, BCC employees were protesting the filing of the cases against Awami League leaders and the mayor.
[11] They demand the cases be withdrawn as civic amenities are being disrupted due to many staff members of the city corporation being accused.
[12] The emergency services of BCC are halted as many did not come to work in fear of getting arrested, said Belayet Bablu, a protesting official of BCC.
