[2] Police have detained 26 people, including Awami League rebel councilor candidate Abdul Quader, from Pathantuli ward of Chattogram city over AL factional clash centering the upcoming city corporation election that left one dead on Tuesday night, report Somoy TV, The Daily Observer.
[3] They were detained during an overnight night drives at different areas of the ward, Double Mooring Police Station Sadip Kumar Das confirmed.
[4] On Tuesday night, Awami League activist Ajgar Ali Babul, 55, was killed and another one was injured in the factional clash at Moghpukur area of Pathantuli ward.
Following the incident, police conducted drives at different areas at night and detained the 26.
[5] On Wednesday, the deceased’s son Sejan Mahmud filed a case suing 13 named and 30-40 unnamed. Councilor candidate Abdul Kader has been made prime accused in the case.
[6] Previously on Tuesday night, the supporters of Awami League-backed councillor candidate, Nazrul Islam, and rebel candidate, Abdul Kader, engaged in the gunfight engaged in a gunfight around 8pm at Mogpukurpar area in Pathantuli ward under Double Mooring police station in the city.
[7] At one stage, two got shot and one of them succumbed to his gunshot wounds. The deceased was identified as Azgar Ali Babul, 55.
Former ward councilor Abdul Kader is known to be a follower of Chittagong city Awami League general secretary AJM Nasir Uddin. This time, Kader failed to secure a ticket from the Awami League.
This time 172 councillor candidates for 40 general wards and 57 councilors for the reserved seat for women have joined the electoral race billed for January 27.
