 Workers and sugarcane farmers have staged a sit-in and human chain to protest the closure of the sugar mill and have demanded 5 points including protection of the sugar mill.
 A protest rally was held in front of the main gate of Natore Sugar Mill yesterday morning under the joint initiative of Bangladesh Sugar Mill Corporation Workers Federation and Bangladesh Sugar Mill Sugarcane Farmers Federation under tight police guard.
 Meanwhile, Moslem Uddin, vice-president of Akhchashi Federation and others spoke at the gate meeting chaired by SM Firoz, president of Natore Sugar Mill Workers Union.  The speakers protested against the closure of the sugar mills and demanded immediate start of production of the sugar mills and payment of all arrears.
Speakers at the rally said that 15 sugar mills of the country should be started simultaneously in the current threshing season. If it is not opened, no sugar mill will be allowed to run. Besides, they demanded payment of dues of workers and sugarcane farmers.
In Faridpur also, workers and farmers gathered at the gate of Milgate yesterday morning demanding five points including payment of arrears of wages of more than 700 workers of the sugar mill and sugarcane farmers.
They immediately announced a larger program if the demand was not met.
There were 15 government sugar mills in the country. Most of the sugar mills have been shut down due to losses. For most of the year, the production of these mills was stopped.
