The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested eight people, including the regional amir and second-in-command of the banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), reports The Daily Star.
They were detained at drives in Rajshahi and Sirajganj. Four suspected militants inside the house cordoned off by Rapid Action Battalion in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj, surrendered yesterday morning. This was confirmed to the media by the Lt Col Ashique Billah, Rab legal and media wing director.
The suspected militants have been identified as Kiron alias Shamim alias Hamim of Sirajganj, Naimul Islam of Santhia in Pabna, Atiar Rahman alias Kolom Soinik of Dinajpur and Aminul Islam alias Shanto of Satkhira, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting Additional Director General of Rab Col Tofayel Mostafa Sarwar.
RAB ADG Tofayel said, “They were taken to Rab custody after surrender. They rented the house saying that they are all students,” adding that as the house owner is a service holder and lives in Bogura, he did not scrutinise their identities.
They were regrouping the banned Islamist group in different districts of north Bengal and providing training to their operatives in Sirajganj, he said.
Members of the elite force cordoned off the suspected militant hideout in Ukilpara area since 5:00am based on information from two suspected militants arrested in Rajshahi last night, reports banglanews24.com. Sensing the presence of law enforcement, criminals fired shots from inside the house. Later, the law enforcers urged them to surrender through loudspeakers and mobile phones collected from the two arrestees. No casualties were reported.
The four arrested in Rajshahi are JMB Rajshahi Regional Amir Jewel Ali alias Habibullah alias Mahmud (33) of Bagatipara in Natore, Ashraful Islam (24) of Khalishpur in Khulna, Sathiar Alif Hossain (20) of Pabna and Jewel Sheikh (22) of Naltar in Satkhira.
