 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presiding over an ECNEC meeting yesterday has said indigenous plants and animals will have to be preserved, reports Jago News.
 After the meeting Planning Minister M A Mannan said this quoting the PM’s remarks as the meeting approved the “Conservation and Development of Local Species of Fish and Snail Project’ sponsored by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
 Mannan said the government would preserve each species of indigenous plants and animals. There is a project on snails. Oyster, Crabs and other plants and animals whatever we have would be brought under the project.
 He said the main theme of the project is to preserve local species of fishes and increase their production.  He said the PM is happy to learn that work is being done with snails which could be used as food, preparing lime and fodder for ducks.
The meeting approved four projects of four ministries, including three revised projects. The total estimated cost of the projects is Tk 534.34 crore, Mannan told a press briefing.
The main objective of the project is to increase fish and snail outputs to 4.46 lakh metric tonnes from 3.86 lakh metric tonnes in the project areas, reports UNB.
He said Tk 202.04 crore by June 2024 on the ‘Conservation and Development of Local Species of Fish and Snail Project To increase fish and snail outputs to 4.46 lakh metric tonnes from 3.86 lakh metric tonnes in the project areas.
