Mango farmers and orchard owners fear sales of the summer fruit will not gain momentum this year amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, they have been assured that this year mangoes can be transported through railways. Concerned people said that the railway will deliver mangoes from Chapainawabganj to Dhaka at a fare of only Tk 1.5 per kg. And the fare from Rajshahi will be tk. 1.30. The information has been revealed at a meeting on mango collection, transportation and marketing at the Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner's Office yesterday (May 20).
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque and was attended by officials of various government institutions including courier services, agriculture department, western railway, district and city police. Mango farmers and traders from different parts of Rajshahi also took part in the meeting. It was decided at the meeting that once the plucking of mangoes starts, only the required number of trains will run from Chapainawabganj to transport mangoes. After reaching Dhaka, the train will be stopped at the station for the convenience of the traders. Various courier service companies from Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj will also take mangoes to Dhaka at the lowest possible cost.
