Police arrested four persons in a case filed for attacking two journalists of NEWS24, a private TV channel, yesterday morning. The arrestees are identified as Golam Mostafa Suman, Sabbir, Jony and Nayon.
Confirming the news, Shahin Fakir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal Police Station, said acting on a tip- off, a team of law enforcers conducted drives and arrested them from different areas in the city. The arrestees were sent to court, he said, adding that drive is underway to arrest others who were involved in the attack.
Earlier on Tuesday, two journalists of NEWS24 were seriously injured and their car was vandalised in a fierce attack by illegal bond traders while they were collecting news on a drive against the misuse of bond facilities by the customs department in Nayabazar area of the capital.
The injured were reporter Fakhrul Islam, 30, and cameraperson Sheikh Jalal, 28. They were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Reporters and camerapersons from NEWS24 went to the spot to collect news on an operation of the customs department against illegal bond traders, Faruque Hossain, Chief Reporter of the TV channel, said.
“A group of illegal bond traders attacked our reporter Fakhrul Islam and cameraman Sheikh Jalal at about 2:00 pm,” he added.
“The attackers vandalised our car and took away a camera, a backpack and tripod from their possession.”
Cameraperson Sheikh Jalal said, “I was collecting footage of the operation. At that moment, bond traders attacked and beat us, vandalised our camera and took away the backpack. Later, locals came forward and rescued us.”
Sources said misuse of bond facilities in the paper sector is widespread. Some companies are selling imported products with bond benefits in open market.
