The central bank is giving licenses to eighteen organizations including a bank, for importing gold legally. The license will be issued for two years. If the import activities of the companies are satisfactory then the license will be renewed later. Bangladesh Bank sources revealed the information.
Earlier, the government had put in place a policy to stop import of gold through illegal means. The central bank gave the opportunity to apply for the appointment of gold dealers from 19 March to 30 September this year to implement the policy. At the time, only 47 organizations applied. 18 organizations including Madhumati Bank, Diamond World, Amin Jewelers, Venus Jewelers and Sharmin Jewelers got approval to import gold.
Bangladesh Bank’s foreign exchange policy was supposed to hand over licenses to representatives of designated companies yesterday (December 1).
Executive Director of the central bank, Sirajul Islam said 47 organzations had applied for permission to import gold. The licenses are being given to 18 organizations after scrutiny. More licenses will be issued later if needed.
