The export of manpower in Bangladesh is a booming Industry which contributes significantly to its GDP. As such, many go abroad with dreams of ‘making it big’ however unfortunately reality differs significantly, reports Kaler Kontho.
This was the case for Munshigonj residents, Suman, Delwar, Mohsin, Helal and Alamgir who are trapped in the African country, Algeria. They have, alongside 17 others in a video begged for aid for their return.
In response to their pleas BRAC had appealed to the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board to retrieve then. The board later contacted Bangladesh’s embassy in Algiers, Algeria to take appropriate steps in this regard.
The manpower export agencies Banna Bijoy Overseas Ltd. and Singapore skill training center sent these unfortunate individuals to Algeria with promises of work which will supposedly pay them 70-80 thousand per month.
Mohammad Farooq, a former expatriate worker who returned from Algeria in February 2019 stated that these agencies took 3 lakh from 53 Bangladeshi people residing in Munshigonj and the areas nearby to send them to Algeria with a permit from the Manpower Employment and Training Bureau.
He divulged that before leaving for Algeria, employees from the agencies coaxed him and other potential expatriates saying that if they did not like it there, they could leave for Spain after working for a few days. The agencies even had maps that depicted the distance between the Algeria and Spain hung in their offices. However when he got there he did not receive payment for his work and was abused when he inquired about his dues.
