Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust has cancelled the cheque of Tk 2 lakh handed over to former Charamba Union chairman of Lohagara upazila, Chittagong and Jamaat donor Sadat Ullah.
Previously on Thursday, Sadat Ullah, an active supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami received the cheque from the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a journalist of daily Inqilab.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed cheques of financial assistance from Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust among ailing, financially insolvent and injured journalists as well as the families of journalists killed in road accidents.
The incident of a Jamaat supporter receiving financial assistance from the PM created uproar in the social media platforms.
Zafar Wazed, managing director of Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust told Chattogram Pratidin that the step was taken to cancel the cheque issued against him (Sadat Ullah).
“The person cannot encash the cheque. Decision was taken to give financial assistance to him before I took over the charge. We are looking into the matter how he was recommended for the financial assistance.”
