9 BCL men held over Abrar murder BUET student Abrar beaten to death, autopsy report confirms

A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was beaten to death after Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men allegedly questioned him suspecting his involvement with Shibir. The deceased was identified as Abrar Fahad, a second-year student at electrical and electronic engineering department of BUET. Abrar Fahad died of “internal bleeding and excessive pain” as he was badly beaten up by blunt objects such as cricket stumps or bamboo sticks, doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital said following his autopsy. Police recovered Abrar’s body from the front of Sher-e-Bangla hall of BUET after the hall authorities informed them of the matter, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Lalbagh Division Kamal Hossain was quoted as saying. Some the hall residents claimed that Abrar was killed by the members of BCL, student body of the ruling Awami League, as he was called by the party activists for interrogation over his alleged involvement with Shibir. Ashikul Islam Bitu, assistant secretary of Chhatra League (BUET unit) said, “Abrar was called from room no 2011 of the hall at 8:00pm yesterday on suspicion that he was a Shibir activist. We checked his Facebook and messenger and found evidence that he follows and likes some controversial pages. Evidence of his association with Shibir was also found”.
“He was questioned by BCL deputy office secretary (BUET unit), also a third-year student of chemical engineering department Mujtaba Rafid; they part’s deputy social secretary Iftee Mosharraf Shokal and deputy law secretary Amit Shaha,” Bitu said.
After getting some proof of his involvement with Shibir, some students of fourth year were asked to come to the room, the BCL man added.
BCL sports secretary (BUET unit) Meftahul Islam Zion; information and research secretary Anik Sharkar came to the spot, Bitu further said.
“At one stage, I left the room. May be, they beat him up after that. Later around 3:00am, I heard Abrar died,” Bitu was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, students of the hall unwilling to be named alleged that Abrar was beaten to death by a cricket stump by BCL men after he was grilled on suspicion of Shibir involvement.
“Students of the hall called me around 3:00am. I went to the hall and saw the body near the stairs. By then he was dead. There were injury marks all over his body”, said BUET’s physician Dr Mashuk Elahi.
At least eight members of BUET unit BCL have been detained in connection with the murder of Abrar Fahad. “They were taken into custody,” Chawkbazar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sohrab Hossain, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The detainees are Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, BUET Chhatra League deputy social service secretary and student of biomedical engineering, and Tanveer, student of mechanical engineering department. Earlier, law enforcement detained BUET Chhatra League General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Joint Secretary Muttakim Fuad, who is also the vice president of Sher-e-Bangla hall, Information and Research Affairs Secretary Anick Sarker, Sports Secretary and student of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Meftahul Islam Zion, Chhatra League Organizing Secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin, Publication Secretary Ishtiak Munna.
Ifti and Tanveer have been detained around 5:30pm, Dhaka Tribune report further suggests.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner Abdul Baten confirmed that six were detained in connection with the murder and found involvement of another four.
DMP Additional Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy said: “We have reasons to suspect that Abrar was beaten to death as we have found evidences in this regard. The duo (Mehedi and Fuad) have been taken into custody for questioning.”
We have begun scrutinizing the CCTV footages and would watch all the video transcripts that were recorded in the cameras. No one would receive impunity regardless of what political parties they belong to,” he told journalists.
He said: “We found evidence of Abrar’s involvement with Chhatra Shibir after scrutinizing his Facebook activities and his messenger. We found that he had shown support to many posts by the Shibir run Facebook page called Basher Kella.
Seeking anonymity, a Chhatra League leader claimed Anick Sarker, information and research affairs secretary of BUET Chhatra League, also a fourth year student of mechanical engineering; and Amit Shaha, deputy law affairs secretary of the same unit, led the attack , reports Dhaka Tribune.
Other alleged attackers are: Mujtaba Rafid, deputy office secretary and student of chemical engineering; Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, deputy social service secretary and student of biomedical engineering.
Abrar’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue around 6am by an ambulance, said Md Kamal Hossain, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Lalbagh division), reports Dhaka Tribune.
He added: “We have not received any formal complaint regarding the matter. However, necessary legal actions will be taken against the culprits.”
Abrar’s cousin, Abu Talha Rasel, staff reporter of Daily Arshinagar, said, “It is impossible to find any involvement of my cousin with Chhatra Shibir…My uncle (Abrar’s father) is a non-government organization (NGO) employee and worked hard during the general election for Awami League lawmaker and Joint-General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif’s election campaign.”
Meanwhile, when police officials began examining CCTV footages around 7am, they found that the camera stopped operating around 2:06am, as there were no recordings after that.
Meanwhile, several hundred students of Dhaka University, led by Ducsu Vice-President Nurul Haque Nur, brought out a protest procession on the campus.
A group of students of Dhaka University (DU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) staged demonstrations protesting the unnatural death of BUET student Abrar Fahad on Monday noon. Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Federation and Chhatra Front took part in the demonstration. The protest procession brought out from Raju Memorial Sculpture of DU around 12pm and ended at BUET campus. DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur expressed his solidarity in the protest programme. Agitators blamed Chhatra League for the death of Abrar and demanded fair trial.
The autopsy report has also confirmed that Abrar was beaten to death by blunt objects. Associate Professor Dr Sohel Mahmud, forensic department head of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), confirmed the matter, reports Dhaka Tribune. He said they have found numerous injury marks on Abrar’s body during the examination.
