The government has been able to increase the literacy rate to 73.9 percent. That means, around 26 percent of adults in Bangladesh are still illiterate. Technical skill has to be enhanced alongside raising literacy rate.
Like every country in the world, Bangladesh yesterday observed Literacy Day.
On this occasion, Primary and Mass Education Ministry has organized a programme at Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. Primary and Mass Education Secretary Akram-Al-Hossain presided over the programme.
In 2018, the literacy rate was 72.9 percent. As per latest information, the literacy rate has risen by 1 percent all over the country.
“Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman said that raising literacy rate is not sufficient. The technical skill has to be enhanced. Then our population will turn into an asset,” said the Minister.
The literacy rate for people aged 15 and above stands at 73.9 percent, shows Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2018 released by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in May.
The rate was 48.8 percent among the same age group in 2008, according to BBS Literacy Assessment Survey 2008.
