Around 73 percent of landless people participated in our glorious Liberation War of 1971 to respond in Bangabandhu’s wake-up call. But their dream is being shattered by a number of marked land grabbers. Landless people still have not a place to sleep in peace, said Sheikh Nasir Uddin, General Secretary of Bangladesh Bhumihin Andolan (Bangladesh Landless Movement).
Nasir Uddin was addressing a human chain on Sunday in protest of the heinous attack on landless people in Bagra of Sherpur upazilla of Bogra.
He said that although the land grabbers live in luxury palaces, they have begun the process of grabbing the last shelter of the landless men and women.
“The local upazilla chairman has attempted to grab the land by gutting down the homesteads of landless people who took shelter on the khas land adjacent to the Bagra Dighir par area of Sherpur upazilla, Bogra. The power elite and their hired hoodlums have caused inhumane torture to landless men and women, ” Nasir Uddin mentioned.
It was further known that the landless people got no help from local thana (police station) despite contacting them repeatedly on their behalf. It proves that the attack on landless people was carried out through connivance of the upazilla chairman and officials in charge of the local thana.
The landless leaders also demanded bringing the culprits to the book.
Organizing Secretary Shahjahan Siraj said that landless people are also citizens of this country. But land grabbers have been tormenting them over the decades.
“We demand resignation of the upazilla chairman,” Siraj said.
The human chain was presided over by Advisor of the organization Iqbal Amin and was addressed by Mosharraf Hossain, Firoz Ahmed, Zahid Hassan, Abdul Mannan, Fazrul Rahman and others.
