‘Mid day meal’ to students from October this year
Yasmin of DOT
Initially decision was taken to provide primary school students with cooked meal at noon. However, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has decided to provide them with egg and bread or egg and banana instead of cooked meal, reports jagonews24.com. They changed their mind considering the wastage of time in serving cooked meal and also that it would hamper the environment of educational institutions.
Experimentally, cooked meal shall be served as ‘mid day meal’ to primary school students from October 16 of this year in the country in 16 upazilas even though it was supposed to commence from 1 January of next year.
Ministry of Primary and Mass Education formed a committee to draft “National School Meal” in 2016.
Although the draft of this policy was drafted in 2017, it was never implemented. Recently, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has finalized ‘National School Meal Policy – 2019’, which is now waiting for approval. Currently development project proposal is being prepared by the ministry, which shall also be sent for approval.
As a part of this proposal, this meal distribution shall start in 16 upazilas, which shall also be started in other 104 upazilas soon. For this, 8000 crore taka shall be spent every year.
