Hong Kong’s English-speaking media – Pro-China?
Ronnie Jordan/ Seven Billion Today
I wanted to read some local stories about the protests in Hong Kong in order to get a better understanding of what kind of image is being portrayed to the public. The main English-speaking news outlet is known as the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
I found their choice of language and wordings very odd. “Official” protest numbers are 240,000 while “organisers say” 1 million. It was a “riot”, and “protesters slipped away leaving bricks and rubbish”. Perhaps I am looking into it too much but in my eyes the protesters are clearly being painted in a negative light here. I am sorry to say this, but maybe Hong Kong is already too far gone and China’s grip has tightened.Perhaps the best should be made of the current situation?
