The Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Vice President-elect Nurul Haque Nur has expressed optimism regarding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s invitation to Ganabhaban.
The newly-elected leaders of DUCSU and hall unions have been invited to the prime minister’s official residence today at 4 pm.
“She didn’t just invite me; she invited all the elected leaders,” he told the media yesterday after visiting the students carrying out hunger strikes on the Dhaka University campus.
“We students contested the polls although it was a questionable one. I will tell her [the PM] about our problems,” he added.
Saying that he is “positive” about meeting the head of the government, Nur added that he will take a final decision after consulting with the other panels.
Criticising the DU administration for not visiting the students on hunger strike, he said “I’m surprised no one visited them.”
Nur had vowed to continue protests against ‘irregularities and rigging’ in the election.
He demanded fresh DUCSU polls by Mar 31 while leaders of panels who boycotted the Mar 11 election gave the authorities a three-day deadline to announce schedule of fresh polls. The university has rejected their demand with the vice-chancellor saying he can’t “disrespect the tireless efforts by all” who worked for the polls.
