Syed Jamil Ahmed brings liberation war play
DOT Desk: Renowned theatre director-academic Syed Jamil Ahmed is bringing a play based on Shahidul Zahir’s liberation war novel Jiban O Rajnaitik Bastobata on stage, reports The New Age. The play will have eleven shows in a theatre festival named Muktijuddha Natya Utsab 2019, which will begin tomorrow at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The play is going to be the debut production of Spardha, a new theatre troupe.
Director Syed Jamil Ahmed briefed on the play at a press conference held on Monday at the seminar room of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
‘As a freedom fighter and also a reader, I have known and read many accounts of the liberation war in many forms. Shahidul Zahir’s Jiban O Rajnaitik Bastobata is the most powerful novel on our liberation war. I have never been able to come out it ever since I read it,’ said Syed Jamil Ahmed.
Jiban O Rajnaitik Bastobata is a portrayal of the liberation war and its impact on the lives of people of an area in old Dhaka. Set in the mid 1980s, the novel depicts how war criminals were rehabilitated just after a few years of liberation war and how people, who suffered during the liberation war at the hands of collaborators, again fall into an atmosphere of fear.
‘The way Shahidul Zahir has presented the story of the liberation war and rehabilitation of collaborators just years after the war touches us deeply. The play we are going to present is a tribute to all freedom fighters, martyrs and those who have lost their dear and near ones in the war,’ said Ahmed, a professor of theatre and performance studies at Dhaka University.
‘We have not adapted the novel into a play; rather we will follow the narrative style to present the story of the novel in the two-hour play,’ Ahmed told New Age.
Ahmed’s earlier directorial venture Rizwan, a play carrying an anti-genocide message, was the most acclaimed play in the recent history of local theatre.
Jiban O Rajnaitik Bastobata will be premiered tomorrow, while it will have two shows every afternoon and evening on March 15, 16, 17 and 20. Single shows will be held on March 18 and 19. Tickets are now available at https://www.noktaarts.com/ and will be available at ticket counter before the shows.
