Negotiation is fair

I am at the MAKERS conference in San Diego, and I have been absolutely floored by the amazing group of women and men I have met and heard speak here.
But I HAVE to share with you this beautiful anecdote that Netflix’s Ted Sarandos shared today because I believe it is a clear example of how gender/pay parity should actually be determined in workplaces – where women are valued for their contributions and compensated fairly. Ted spoke of how he had
interviewed 4 candidates for a job – 3 handsomely paid men (and in higher pay bracket range) and 1 woman who came in at a relatively lower pay (because of historic compensation reasons); after the interview, he hired the woman, but once she was hired, he called her in within 3 months, told her what the pay they would have offered for her role if one of the men got in,& revised her pay up to ensure she’s compensated fairly and EQUALLY for her contributions. This anecdote moved me deeply and I’m sure will stay with me, because of the act of honesty, depth of wisdom, fairness that shines through. Equality is in mind and action and a way of living. Hats off.
