2,200 arrests after PM’s promise: BNP
Hossen Sohel of DOT : Over 2,200 leaders and activists of BNP were detained in the last three days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s promise of “no more political arrests”, the party alleged yesterday, reports The Daily Star.
“PM Hasina promised Jatiya Oikyafront that political leaders and activists won’t be arrested anymore,” said BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
But, over 2,200 BNP leaders and activists were held countrywide centering Oikyafront’s rally on Tuesday in the last 72 hours, Rizvi alleged in a press briefing.
Rizvi, who was speaking at the Nayapaltan central office of BNP, condemned the arrests.
Jatiya Oikyafront is the major political opposition alliance formed ahead of the general elections against the ruling Awami League-led alliance that includes BNP.
Yesterday, it held second round of pre-election dialogue with the ruling alliance at Gono Bhaban. However, key issues remained unsolved in the talks.
But, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, after the meeting, said that Prime Minister Hasina will be considering release of political prisoners.
He also said, Oikyafront will be allowed to continue democratic practices.
