Rajshahi city dwellers want to get rid of dirt
Desk Report: The Rajshahi city, once known as Clean City has turned into a dirty city, reports Observer BD.
Most of the roads are in pitiable condition. Water accumulates if there is a little rain due to poor condition of the drainage system. Dirt stacks on the main roads spreading bad smell all over the area from the garbage. There are insufficient light in the roads at night.
Meanwhile, the mayor-elect Khairuzzaman Liton expressed confidence that the city will be cleaned within the next 100 days.
In 2008, RCC’s cleaners began to take daily dirt and garbage away from home the time of Khairuzzaman Liton.
Sweeping of the main streets of the city begins in the late night to control the city’s dust. Apart from this, the riverfront areas are beautified for the city dwellers as well as to attract tourists from outside. Walkway is constructed on the banks of the Padma river along with the Lalon Shah open platform.
To create Rajshahi City Corporation’s own earning way, Liton had took initiatives to build a number of markets including the City Center and the Daruchini Plaza on RCC’s own land.
At the same time, initiatives were taken to establish a private university under RCC’s supervision. And the main purpose of these initiatives was not to burden the residents with excess tax for RCC’s income.
Sajib, a resident of Padma residential area, said that the road to the door of the residential gate has been broken for nearly 5 years. Talaimari station road is now fully damaged. Without a lane, the contractor has started work on two lanes. As a result, this road is no longer suitable for walking.
A resident of Siroil Colony said, “Day and night dirt is kept at the entrance of our colony. As a result, people are suffering. In the last 5 years, Rajshahi has become the city of dust. Due to the absence of a proper drainage system, this water logging is happening.
The city dwellers have chosen their new mayor to get rid of this suffering. They hope, he may save them from their current suffering.
