MEMO: The Egyptian Interior Ministry yesterday announced that 13 people affiliated with the bannedMuslim Brotherhood were arrested for inciting “demonstrations and chaos”.
The ministry said in a statement that six members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested inthe governorate of Sohag, while seven others were arrested while riding a bus in Beheiragovernorate.
According to the statement the detainees planned to hold “organisational meetings toimplement a scheme to spread rumours to provoke the citizens and urge them to demonstrateand create a state of chaos, coinciding with the anniversary of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya sit-in”.
It added that “the detainees had documents and electronic devices with them which containedthe orders issued to them to implement their plans as well as large sums of money in differentcurrencies.”
Yesterday was the fifth anniversary of the Egyptian army and police forces’ violent dispersal ofthe pro-democracy sit-ins organised in Rabaa Al-Adawiya and Al-Nahda Squares to supportdeposed President, Mohamed Morsi. Thousands of activists were shot, burnt alive orsuffocated with tear gas at the scene.
