Sofian Khan: Amid allegations of irregularities surrounding the gold kept by the customs in the vault of Bangladesh Bank, the State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan said the gold in the Bangladesh Bank vaults is “all right”.
Following an urgent meeting at the secretariat yesterday, MA Mannan said, “Bangladesh Bank is responsible for looking after the property of the public and if there has been any negligence in the matter then it is the job of the government to look into it.”
The minister also said that he will brief the finance minister after his return to the country on the allegations of adulterated gold in the highly secure vault.
“The purity of the gold [bar] was 40%, but it was mistakenly written 80%. It was a clerical error,” BB Executive Director SM Rabiul Hassan told reporters at an emergency briefing at the BB headquarters yesterday.
The meeting was called following a national daily’s report on the gold scam in the vault of the central bank citing an inspection by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate or CIID.
Fazle Kabir, Bangladesh Bank governor, Md Eunusur Rahman, secretary to the Bank and Financial Institutions Division, and Shahidul Islam, director general of CIID, attended the meeting.
