US wants BD to fulfill its ‘commitment of holding fair polls’

Afrida Ahmed: The United States wants Bangladesh to complete its promise to have a free, equal and credible national election in the country, reports UNB.
Yesterday, speaking at Jatiya Press Club, US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat said they are looking forward to the commitment of the government of Bangladesh in holding free, fair and credible elections that will reflect the choice of Bangladeshi people.
General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu and DCAB President  Rezaul Karim Lotus spoke on the occasion.
Ambassador Bernicat complimented the elections held in Khulna and Gazipur city corporations but expressed concern on the election being irregular and unfair due to ballot box stuffing, intimidation of political players, polling agents.
She was satisfied with the lower level of violence but was much tensed about the reports of police harassment and arrest of opposition polling agents.
Bernicat said that good elections took place in Bangladesh in the past and Bangladesh has laws and know-how to hold fair elections.
