Govt has to ensure fair rice prices for farmers
Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank: The government should take into consideration the production cost of crops and the amount the farmers are being paid. They must ensure that the farmers get fair rice price.
Since Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country, there is a huge buffer stock of rice which was very low last year. This is a great deal of failure for the ministry of food. Farmers are compelled to reduce the price by Tk2-3 because most of our traders import rice. This gradually pushes a farmer toward loss.
There should be stern initiatives to stop any type of rice import urgently. Since the government subsidizes the agriculture sector, the farmers of our country will be able to turn around from losses. This will not be done by depending on the ministry of food. The ministry of agriculture is responsible for dealing with the farmers which they failed accomplishing terribly.
