Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam,Professor, Dept. of English, University of Dhaka: Any developed country needs skilled manpower since it is not possible to ensure sustainable development without skilled workforce. We hire managers from abroad, who take away $5 billion from us every year, mostly from the pharmaceutical and RMG sectors. The skilled manager is who can execute plans and perform as expected. They understand everything and push up the profit volume. The person who can manage everything well and predict from outside is a good manager. Why are we failing to do so? This is all because we don’t have quality education to create a competent manpower. Our students constantly remain indulged in social media sites including Facebok, twitter etc. since they could not grow in them the interest of education. According to media reports, only the job-seekers go to public libraries. But all kind walks people are supposed to go to the public libraries. Students must go to public libraries for the books they don’t have, but do they do so? Queues start forming in front of Dhaka University central library from 7am, but why? This is all because of taking preparation for the BCS exam and book tables inside the library. Our education system has failed to create library-centric reading habit among the students since we are creating army of parrots by putting pressure and making the students memorise their lessons. These matters need to be taken care of. Translated By Sayeed Muhammad
