Imported mobile handsets to be costlier

Abrar Hussain: Imp-orted mobile phone handsets will be costlier after Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday proposed a 1 percentage point surcharge increase in his budget speech for fiscal 2018-19 at the parliament.
Currently, there are 10% customers’ duty, 15% vat, 2% advance income tax and another 1% surcharge on imported mobile phone handsets, reported The Daily Star.
However, the finance minister also proposed reducing tax on import of raw materials for mobile phone manufacturing industries, which might help to reduce local assembling costs.
“Mobile phone has a very important role to play in spreading information technology enabled services. In order to flourish mobile manufacturing industry and to attract investment in this sector, I am proposing to issue a separate SRO allowing the VAT exemption facility on mobile telephone set manufacturing,” said Muhith.
