Two more drug suspects killed in ‘gunfights’, toll nears 140
Abrar Hussain: Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in ‘gunfights’ in Chandpur and Mymensingh districts in the early hours of yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased have been identified as Yunus Miaji alias Sumon, 35, son of one Abdul Majid Miaji of Madhya Sriramdi Bou Bazar area of Chandpur sadar upazila and Manik Mia, 30, son of one Jagat Mia in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh.
With the death of Sumon and Manik, the number of people killed by law enforcers in the ongoing countrywide anti-narcotics operation has risen to at least 137 in the last 24 days.
A total of 71 people were killed in alleged gunfights with police and DB members, 34 with RAB and 32 were killed during gunfights between rival groups, according to statistics by law enforcement agencies. However, the daily Prothom Alo reports that it could not verify this data independently.
In Chandpur, a team of police on a tip off conducted a drive around 1:45am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcement, the criminals reportedly open fired after which police retaliated. The suspected drug peddler Yunus Miaji alias Sumon sustained injuries in the ensuing “gunfight” in the East Sriramdi of the district town.
Yunus was taken to Chandpur General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, said Chandpur Model Police Station OC Wali Ullah Oli, adding that 5 policeman were injured in the incident.
