11 ‘drug peddlers’ killed in countrywide ‘gunfight’ spree
Sofian Khan: Eleven more suspected drug peddlers have reportedly been killed in continuous gunfight across the country till early Tuesday. With this, the total number of drug peddlers killed in ‘gunfights’ has numbered to 33 in the last 8 days. The fresh incidents took place through Comilla, Dinajpur, Chuadanga, Feni, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria and Netrokona.
A listed peddler in Dinajpur, Probal Hossain (35), was killed in a reported gunfight leaving Sub-inspector Khurshidul Alam of Birampur Police Station injured. According to Officer-in-Charge Adbus Sabur, they were on a raid in Damadarpur village around 2:15am when they faced intense gunfire. A gunfight triggered when police retaliated. After the battle subsided, the body was recovered and a pistol, two bullets, and 93 bottles of phensidyl seized.
Two more peddlers, Peyar Ali (24) and Sharif (26) were killed in Comilla in another gunfight around 12:40am leaving 4 policemen injured. According to Kotwali Police Station OC, the team recovered the bodies and 400 bottles of Phensidyl, 50 kg hemp, a pistol with two round bullets and a Pazero zip.
Johni Islam (34) and Shahin (32) were killed in a drive by the police as it turned into a gunfight in Islambag area under Saidpur municipality in Nilphamari. According to the asst. superintendent of Police of Saidpur circle, four police personnel were also injured.
Two top listed peddlers, Bachchu and Monjur Alam of Narayanganj and Feni respectively, were killed in separate drives by different law enforcement agencies. According to Rab-7 Squadron Leader Safayat Jamil, Monjur was a top listed peddler whose name was on the list prepared by the home ministry. He was arrested with over 5 lakh yaba pills and stood accused in multiple cases including drug and robbery in 2015.
