Prof. Dr. A. B. M Abdullah, Professor, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University : To fast is merciful as well as a golden opportunity to control diabetes. Fasting in the proper ways that result to various benefits for the diabetes patients.
Since moderate meal is the key to control diabetes, fasting can become very handful.
For those who are not dependent on insulin, fasting may be considered as ideal therapy.
Even those who takes insulin, fasting will help them to reduce the level medication. Not only blood glucose, fast ing also plays vital role controlling the blood fat. Besides, it teaches the patient with restraint, moderation and discipline, which is essential for the treatment of diabetes.Cholesterol: Fasting also helps those who have high cholesterol levels. It works by increasing high-density lipoproteins (HDL) which is known to be good cholesterol by and decreasing low-density lipoproteins (LDL) which is known to be bad cholesterol and triglyceride.
Overweight: For those who are overweight, fasting is an easy and golden opportunity to them lose weight. Due to the decreasing weight, they can also live a secure life from various diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, osteoarthritis, gout etc. Again, reduced weight also decreased the the cholesterol level.
Heart disease and high blood pressure: Since fasting results to controlled diabetes and cholesterol level, it becomes very beneficial for those who are suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure.
This helps reduce the fat of the body and especially of the blood vessels and blood clots atherosclerosis reducing the risk of heart disease and control high blood pressure.
