Khondokar Alamgir Hussain: If the polls held at Kh-ulna were impartial, then there would have been no doubts about the election. The vote rigging and fixing that took place was unbelievable. The Election Commission (EC) failed my expectations, although it did postpone elections at 3 polling centers. I believe the EC has failed to organize an impartial election in Khulna.
These views regarding the recent elections in Khulna were expressed by Shushashoner Jonno Nagoriker (Shujan) President Kudrat E Khoda yesterday in an interview.
According to Kudrat, the Commission was unable to prevent the flood of fake votes like it was supposed to. It has been alleged that even the presiding officers were silent. It doesn’t matter whether this was because of fear or something else – the residing officers failed their duty and were indifferent. If the Election Commission took proper steps then such an isolated incident would never have occurred. Had the EC took proper and impartial steps, voters could have exercised their rights fairly. The candidate who earns the maximum number of votes would win – that is the norm. Law enforcement authorities performed their duties diligently; hence there were no reports of violence.
Kudrat further added that verbal bickering between the two candidates prior to the polls fueled hostility between their men. This caused tension in voters. However, in some centers voter turnout was poor while in others it was quite high. There was an air of anxiety in the people of Khulna till 5:00pm that day. Fearing the worst, the city was completely abandoned.
