Sayeed Muhammad: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is set to deliver a judgment next Tuesday on the two leave-to-appeal petitions filed challenging BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s bail. The High Court had granted the bail to the former prime minister after she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, reports UNB.A four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, set the date after closing arguments from both sides yesterday.Earlier on Tuesday, the apex court adjourned for Wednesday the hearing on the two petitions. Before that, the court had allowed the state and the ACC to file petitions against the HC order that granted bail to Khaleda.On February 8, Dhaka’s Special Court-5 sentenced Khaleda to five years’ imprisonment in the graft case, leading to her incarceration at the old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka.However, the BNP chief secured four months’ bail from the High Court in the case on March 12.Three days later, the ACC and the state filed two leave-to-appeal petitions before the Appellate Division challenging the bail.Meanwhile, Khaleda asked her lawyers on May 5 to bring the matter of her ‘serious illness’ to the notice of the Supreme Court during the hearing on her bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
