BNP remark on polls-time government poor

Prof Dr Syed Anwar Hossain, historian

The statement of BNP regarding the polls-time government is very weak. The party is burier busy handling cases filed against its leaders and activists than concentrating on politics. The grassroots BNP first commented on the mistake that the party made by boycotting the January 5 general election in 2014. So the grassroots leaders and activists of the party will not repeat the same mistake this time around. He also said, “I believe that BNP will go to the polls; regardless of whatever it says.” It is said that BNP’s registration with the election commission will be cancelled if it refrains from the next general polls to be held by the year end. The party will collapse if it avoids the election.Leadership and orgsanisational weakness are the major issues BNP is facing now. Moreover, two top leaders of the party are having testing time. Tarique Rahman had gone to the UK for treatment purposes by signing an undertaking that he would not do politics there. But he is doing so staying in London. The way he is accused in the legal system does not mean that it is possible for him to run the polls race. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, too, is incarcerated being convicted of graft. Amid such a situation, we will have to wait which stance BNP takes (regarding the next parliamentary election).
