Writ seeks compensation for 20 who lost eyes following surgery in Chuadanga
Sayeed Muhammad: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking Tk1 crore as compensation for 20 affected people each who lost one of their eyes after operations at a Chuadanga hospital.Lawyer Amit Dasgupta filed the petition yesterday after a report styled “20 people lose eyes at an eye campaign” published in a daily newspaper on March 29, reports Bangla Tribune. The ill-fated underwent treatment at IMPACT Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre in Chuadanga. Hearing in the writ petition will likely take place at the bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Iqbal Kabir, said the petitoner. The petition sought a rule asking why inaction of the health centre and related doctors in adopting proper measures while conducting eye operations of so many people during a three-day campaign should not be declared illegal.It also sought legal action against the hospital authorities and doctors. Secretaries to the health and home ministers, directorate general of health services, Chuadanga civil surgeon, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Chuadanga, IMPACT Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre and Dr Md Shahin, who conducted the surgery, are were respondents to the rule. According to the newspaper report, the affected people are poor who had eye operations at the community health centre after taking loans from relatives or NGOs or selling their domestic animals. They were suffering from eye infection after the operation. Later they were sent to Dhaka for better treatment. IMPACT covered the costs.
