DU kills self after failing to get govt job
Sayeed Muhammad: A postgraduate student of Dhaka University (DU) has killed himself ostensibly for several failed attempts to get a government job. Tanvir Rahman, 30, an evening MBA student at accounting and information systems department, hailed from the Sadar upazila of Brahmanbaria district, reports the Dhaka Tribune. DU Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani said Tanvir, who used to stay in Dhaka, jumped off the rooftop of the university’s MBA building around 8:30pm on Saturday. “Some students immediately took him [Tanvir] to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors pronounced him dead,” he added. “Police are handling the matter now. We will help with the investigation in any way we can, including providing the CCTV footage,” Prof Rabbani said. Tanvir had joined a private firm four days ago, but he was not happy with it, said his family members. His maternal uncle Abu Bakar Siddique said Tanvir had been applying for government jobs for the past four years, but had failed to get an offer. “Being a freedom fighter’s son, he grew increasingly frustrated that he could not get any job in public service. His frustration might have driven him to committing suicide,” he added. “We are not sure what happened,” Siddique said. “Police will investigate to find out why Tanvir took this drastic step.” Police sources said they also found sleeping pills in Tanvir’s bag while he was laid to rest at his village in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila after the Maghrib prayers on Sunday.
