BNP accuses govt of treating Khaleda Zia as ordinary prisoner
BNP voiced concern on Friday over the media reports that its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who’s been convicted in the Zia orphanage graft case, has been kept in the jail like any other ordinary prisoners. ‘We’ve come to know through media reports that our leader (Khaleda) has been kept like a simple prisoner. We can’t be clear what’s happening in the jail. We also don’t know how her condition is now,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan. Rizvi said the government has no rights to treat Khaleda like this since she is a ‘three-time’ elected Prime Minister as well the chief of the ‘biggest’ political party of the country. ‘Why have you (govt) stooped so low in your taste?’A makeshift court on Thursday convicted the Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.Five other accused in the case are Khaleda’s son and BNP senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment each with a Tk 2.10 crore each.
