Syed Mahmud Hossain takes oath as new CJ

Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), has been sworn in as the new chief justice of the country.President Abdul Hamid administered the oath-taking programme at his official residence Bangabhaban in Dhaka yesterday evening, reports The Daily Star. The post of the chief justice fell vacant after former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha stepped down on November 10 last year.Earlier, Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the apex court, served as the acting CJ from October 3 last year.When asked why Justice Wahhab is not appointed as the CJ, Law Minister Anisul Haque said the president is the sole authority to appoint the chief justice.
