Country’s maiden apparel factory inside jail opened in N’ganj

For the first time in the history of Bangladeshi prisons, the government has inaugurated the country’s first-ever garment factory, established inside Narayanganj District Jail, aiming at helping inmates make money. After the inauguration, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the media, “All prisoners at different prisons in parts of the country are provided with training for their reform and are given all kinds of facilities. They, in phases, will be provided with more facilities.”
Around 11am yesterday, the minister officially launched the factory called “Resilience Garments Industry” inside the jail, reports The Daily Star.He also inaugurated a Jamdani Production Center there.As of November last, the prison accommodated some 2,150 inmates; around 300 of whom be working at the factory, said Subhash Das, superintendent of the jail.Some 300-400 prisoners received training from Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to run the factory in two shifts, according to UNB.Their earnings will be deposited to their respective accounts. They can either send the money to their families or withdraw the entire amount at the end of their jail ter, term in the prison, the jail super said.At least 57 imported machines have been installed in the apparel factory built on 5,000 square feet of area with the help of the district administration and the Department of Social Services.
