In a latest move, the High Court has issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why ‘Joy Bangla’ should not be declared the national slogan.
It also asked cabinet secretary, and law and education secretaries to respond to the rule within 72 hours.The HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Rezaul haque and Mahmudullah passed the order yesterday following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Dr Bashir Ahmed. Advocate Dr Bashir said the copy of the rule will be sent to the respondents.In the petition, he mentioned that “Joy Bangla” was the slogan of freedom fighters and the people of Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War.Many countries have a national slogan; for instance, Jai Hind in India, he observed.“But we do not have a national motto or slogan,” the lawyer regretted, adding that the court has fixed December 10 for next hearing on the rule.
