Three days after the death of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq, the government has declared the mayoral post vacant. “The accouchement came on Sunday and a gazette notification in this regard has been published today (Monday),” Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Engr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain told reporters at the Secretariat yesterday.He said the Election Commission (EC) will organise the by-polls to the DNCC within 90 days conforming with the relevant law. Replying to a question about new mayor, the minister said, “It would not be easy for the new mayor to go out of the foundation that was built by Annisul.”On Sunday, the EC said it was gearing up for the by-election scheduled to be held within a span of 90 days after the government announces the vacancy.Annisul was suffering from cerebral vasculitis, an inflammation of the blood vessel wall in the brain, and died at a London hospital at the age of 65 on Thursday. As an Awami League candidate, he was elected mayor in the DNCC polls held on April 28, 2015.
