Trudeau Apologizes to LGBTQ2 Community

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologizes for the purge of LGBTQ2 individuals from public service in the 20th century. He said, “On behalf of the government parliament and the people of Canada, we were wrong and we apologize and we will never let this happen again.” The Canadian government had a 30+ year campaign in which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police set up a program to remove people from the military or public office because of their sexual orientation. The program only ended in 1992. Trudeau undertakes $85M in compensation to the victims and their loved ones. It’s not the first time Trudeau has apologized for the misdeeds of previous times for the abuse towards the First Nations and other indigenous peoples. In 2016, he apologized to the Sikh in Canada for the Komagata Maru incident where nearly 376 Indian immigrants were stopped from entering the country. When they got back to India, 19 of them were killed in clashes with British soldiers.
