Manus Island Refugee Finds Safety

Tanzim Taqrim

Amir Taghinia was detained on Manus Island, one of Australia’s condemned detention centers. The 24 year old Iranian refuge smuggled a cellphone to share shocking photos and videos and to research countries that might help him leave. Then he heard about private sponsorship in Canada, which resettled 300,000 refugees since 1979. But he needed a Canadian to vouch for him. Then Amir remembered a nurse who gave immunization on Manus Island. With no information other than her name, Amir found a way to contact Chelsea. It took twelve Canadian two years to help. Now, Amir lives with Chelsea’s parents. He made it to Canada just days after the detention center officially closed on October 31. Detainees were forcefully transferred after three weeks of protest. Amir continues to fight for their freedom.
